ERC129 Haydn / Boccherini - Cello Concerto in C / Cello Concerto in B flat Played by Jacqueline Du Pre and the English Chamber Orchestra Conducted by Daniel Barenboim

Originally released on HMV in 1967, this recording marked the first successful collaboration between the young Jacqueline du Pré and her husband, Daniel Barenboim.

Du Pré’s performance of Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major was among the earliest major recordings to champion the work following its rediscovery in Prague in 1961, after nearly two centuries of being presumed lost.  She approaches Haydn with remarkable depth and authority, while transforming the heavily revised Boccherini–Grützmacher Cello Concerto in B flat into a sweeping Romantic showpiece.

Conducted by Barenboim, the recording captures an extraordinary musical intimacy. Du Pré’s singing vibrato, rich tone and emotional intensity are matched by the responsive English Chamber Orchestra, resulting in one of the defining performances of her tragically short career.

Cut directly from the original analog master tapes, through our unique all valve 1965 Ortofon / Lyrec vinyl cutting system in stereo. No equalisation, compression or any other processing was added during the cutting process.

All sleeve artwork made by hand and authentically letter-pressed on a 1963 Heidelberg SB.
